It is very important that on February 28th, 1928, Raman announced the discovery of the Raman effect at the Indian Institute of Science in Bangalore, and was awarded the 1930 Noble Prize in physics for his work. Hence, the National Science Day holds great significance for Indian Science and scientific community. Whole nation takes the honour of thanking all the scientists for their remarkable contributions and dedication on this occasion.
Science has played very important role in transforming society. The events on this day remind the importance of science; thus inspire people of all ages to work in the field of science, engineering and technology. National Science Day is observed to spread the message of importance of science and its application among the people. Science has contributed a lot towards welfare of humanity and this day is celebrated to accelerate the pace of development.
Note that Raman was the first Asian and first non-White to get any Nobel Prize in science in year 1930. He was elected to the Royal Society of London in 1924 and knighted by the British Empire in 1929. In 1954, Raman was awarded the Bharat Ratna and honoured with the Lenin Peace Prize in 1957.
We know that C.V. Raman was born at Trichinopoly in Southern India on November 7th,1888. His father was a lecturer in mathematics and physics. He entered Presidency College, Madras, in 1902, and in 1904 passed his B.A. examination, winning the first place and the gold medal in physics; in 1907 he gained his M.A. degree, obtaining the highest distinctions. In 1917 he was accepted Palit Chair of Physics at Calcutta University then he became Professor at the Indian Institute of Science at Bangalore in 1934, and since 1948 he is Director of the Raman Institute of Research at Bangalore, until till death in 1970 at the age of 82 on the 21th Nov,1970 . He was founded the Indian Journal of Physics in 1926.
